Learn Korean with One Verb: 타요 (Tayo)

Learning Korean becomes easier when you practice one simple pattern at a time.

In the previous lesson, we practiced 가요 (gayo), meaning "to go."

Today, we'll learn another useful Korean verb:

타요 (tayo) — to ride, take, or get on

In English, we use different verbs depending on the situation. We take a bus, ride a bicycle, and go on a swing.

But in Korean, you can use 타요 in all of these situations.

Let's learn one verb and practice it with many different words.

A city bus on a quiet Korean street in warm natural light.

Today's Sentence

Let's start with a simple and useful sentence.

Read the Korean sentence first.

Then check the Romanization.

Finally, read the English meaning.

🇰🇷 버스를 타요.

🔤 Beoseureul tayo.

🇺🇸 I take the bus.

Try reading it several times.

Don't rush.

The goal is to become familiar with the pattern:

Noun + 을/를 + 타요.

Once you recognize this pattern, you can make many new Korean sentences.

A calm Korean subway platform with a train arriving in soft natural light.

One Verb, Many Things

Now let's change only one word.

The verb stays the same.

🇰🇷 지하철을 타요.

🔤 Jihacheoreul tayo.

🇺🇸 I take the subway.

🇰🇷 택시를 타요.

🔤 Taeksireul tayo.

🇺🇸 I take a taxi.

🇰🇷 기차를 타요.

🔤 Gichareul tayo.

🇺🇸 I take the train.

🇰🇷 비행기를 타요.

🔤 Bihaenggireul tayo.

🇺🇸 I take a plane.

These are common examples of 타요 with transportation.

But 타요 can be used for much more than buses, trains, and planes.

A person riding a bicycle along a quiet park path in Korea, seen from behind, surrounded by warm natural scenery.

타요 Is Not Just for Transportation

Here's something interesting about Korean.

You can use 타요 with many different things.

For example:

🇰🇷 자전거를 타요.

🔤 Jajeongeoreul tayo.

🇺🇸 I ride a bicycle.

🇰🇷 킥보드를 타요.

🔤 Kikbodeureul tayo.

🇺🇸 I ride a kick scooter.

🇰🇷 그네를 타요.

🔤 Geunereul tayo.

🇺🇸 I ride on a swing.

🇰🇷 미끄럼틀을 타요.

🔤 Mikkeureomteureul tayo.

🇺🇸 I go down a slide.

In English, these sentences use different verbs.

But in Korean, they all use the same verb:

타요.

That's why learning one Korean verb can help you make many different sentences.

A child riding a swing in a quiet Korean playground, seen from behind, with the face not visible and warm beige tones.

One Pattern, More Possibilities

Let's look at a few more things you can use with 타요.

🇰🇷 스키를 타요.

🔤 Seukireul tayo.

🇺🇸 I ski.

🇰🇷 썰매를 타요.

🔤 Sseolmaereul tayo.

🇺🇸 I ride a sled.

🇰🇷 놀이기구를 타요.

🔤 Norigigureul tayo.

🇺🇸 I go on an amusement ride.

You don't need to memorize every sentence today.

Just notice the repeated pattern.

The noun changes.

The verb stays the same.

타요.

A child going down a slide in a quiet Korean playground, with the face not emphasized, in warm natural light and soft beige tones.

Today's Challenge

Now it's your turn.

What do you like to ride?

Choose one word and complete the sentence:

_____을/를 타요.

For example:

🇰🇷 자전거를 타요.

🔤 Jajeongeoreul tayo.

🇺🇸 I ride a bicycle.

Or:

🇰🇷 그네를 타요.

🔤 Geunereul tayo.

🇺🇸 I ride on a swing.

Read your sentence aloud.

Then try writing it by hand.

One verb.

One pattern.

Many new sentences.

That's enough for today.
